I was originally interested in doing a more loose work in oil pastel inspired by the works of Henri Matisse, but I couldn't seem to find my oil pastels anywhere, however during my search I came across this old tube of green lipstick from an old Halloween costume and thought that lipstick was kind of similar to a pastel. Matisse was a founding member of the Fauvist movement, a movement characterized by strong blocks of color and fierce brushwork. Matisse himself believed that forms could be simplified, and therefore elevated through the use of chunks of bright rich colors. Because of the medium of lipstick I chose, I wanted to create a peice that sort of reflects the sort of glamour that lipstick is associated with. So I drew from the veins of his portraiture and with bold strokes of the lipstick tube, created a frightful girl looking at the viewer. I want to gather more tubes of cheap colorful lipstick, and go back and elevate this piece in a way that better reflects Matisse's use of form and color.
